  44. since I'm one of those techs that took 5wpm *and* the complete general theory
  45. to get my ticket, I would have expected something a little different on 
  46. my ticket like a tech+ perhaps.  should I try again with a new 610 and 
  47. a nice letter?

  107. Could anyone tell me what kind of symptoms you would see with a "blown"
  108. trap?  I have one that is acting a little strange right now (basically,
  109. a lack of reception across the bands... the radio is fine).  I put an
  110. ohm meter across the coax feed line from the antennae (disconnected from
  111. the radio, of course) and it appears to be a short.  I wouldn't have 
  112. thought that it should look like this.  However, I'm not sure what the
  113. traps will do.  I thought that they were supposed to "trap" electrically
  114. the length of the antennae at the given frequencies.  With an ohm meter
  115. which uses a DC voltage, would the antennae appear as a short to ground?

  143.     O   Congressional requests to the FCC as to why it takes so long :-)

  272. Hi everyone.  I am living in Europe and using an American model 2-meter
  273. handheld.  Over here, one needs a 1750 Hz tone burst to open the repeaters.
  274. I have not been able to find a commercially-available tone generator in the
  275. Cologne, Germany area, and I am tierd of trying to whistel the repeaters
  276. open, so I guess I have to build one instead.  Does anyone know where I can
  277. find a simple and potentially compact design/schematic for a 1750 Hz tone
  278. generator?  Does anyone know where to buy one?  How about a tuneable
  279. whistle? ;-) ;-)

  302.     The Radio Active Communications Club of Southeastern Michigan (RACC)
  303. will be holding an annual picnic/fox hunt demo this Sunday, 17 July at a
  304. public park in S.E. Michigan.

  306.     This event is open to ALL who would like to learn about fox-hunting,
  307. the RACC, or even just ham radio in general.

  309.     There will be a limited amount (depending on turnout) of
  310. refreshments and possibly food available for attendees, although we

  315. Dearborn, Michigan.  Crowley Park is near Telegraph Road & Michigan Avenue.

  359.  Again in 1994, the Toronto VHF Society - VE3ONT, will participate in the ARRL
  360.  EME Contest using the Institute for Space and Terrestrial Science's 46m (150')
  361.  Algonquin Park dish (grid square FN05xw).  This year's operation will provide
  362.  an increased opportunity to work 144 MHz stations.

  371.  Because the Algonquin dish has a 9 degree lower elevation limit, stations with
  372.  horizon fixed antennas in eastern North America will have a limited chance to
  373.  work VE3ONT.  The following operating hints will improve your chance of making
  374.  a QSO.

  376.  - As in 1993, VE3ONT will work "split" frequency.  Do not call on VE3ONT's TX
  377.       frequency.  Pick a random frequency in the listening range.  Use the full
  378.       range; we will be looking for stations in the clear.
  379.  
  380.  - VE3ONT will use circular polarization on all bands.  You may use linear or
  381.       circular polarization to work us.  If circular, use RHCP on TX and RX for
  382.       144 and 432.  On 1296 we will have switchable sense so you may use either
  383.       the satellite or EME polarization convention.
  384.  
  385.  - Conditions permitting, VE3ONT may start each operating period on SSB to work
  386.       strong stations as quickly as possible.  Please do not call again for a
  387.       second contact on CW.  Conversely, if you work us on CW please do not call
  388.       again for a SSB QSO.
  389.  
  390.  - All contacts will be "random" with no schedules or sequencing.  Please be
  391.       patient; QRM on our end was intense in 1993.
  392.  
  393.  Low power and OSCAR class stations are encouraged to make an EME contact.  100
  394.  watts delivered to a single long yagi should be sufficient on 144 and 432.  On
  395.  1296, stations were worked with as little as 10 watts and a 2m (6') dish in
  396.  1993.

  398.  Use of the dish at the Algonquin Space Complex is always subject to last minute
  399.  preemption for non-Amateur purposes.

  446. Which (and let me say that yes I'm an ARRL member) further
  447. emphasises the need to work with some organization that can speak 
  448. for a major segment of amateurs.  Like it or not, the only such
  449. entity is the ARRL.  And, as with any other organization that
  450. holds open elections (i.e for local directors, SMs, etc.) it takes
  451. people willing to get involved.  I note that there always is one or
  452. more section that seems to go begging for someone to hold the
  453. position(s).  Few, if any, positions are contested.
  454.  
  455. If the ARRL filed a petition tomorrow, as it has in the past, you
  456. can bet that it'd get far more attention than any filling by an
  457. individual ham.

  471. Seems to me I've read of numerous (numerous, not many) hams
  472. being fined by the FCC for all types of interference problems,
  473. including interference to repeaters.  Does the FCC have lots
  474. of resources to devote to amateur radio complaints...simply
  475. put...no.  That's typical governmental enforcement problems,
  476. not enough resourses for the job that should be done.
  477.  
  478. Self regulating works far more often than you might believe.  Does
  479. it work all the time, certainly not, and that's when we need to get
  480. all the fcats straight and properly presented so we can 
  481. convince the FCC that a problem exists that must be pursued.
  482. That;s not always easy, nut given the lack of FCC resources,
  483. what else would you suggest we do?

  500. have observed nothing short of a strict adhearence to the rules.

  507. Frankly, memorizing the answers to 300 or more exact questions
  508. strikes me as quite an accomplishment by anyone.  Would you prefer
  509. an essay exam?  The one area I would agree that can be improved
  510. is the use of applicable formulas...such test questions should
  511. be generic and require a new set of numeric variables for each
  512. test session to avoid memorization on those questions.  For many
  513. other questions, memorization is still a big part of the learning
  514. process...that's the only way to learn the FCC rules questions.
  515. The ham band for 80 meters is 3.5MHz to 4.0...tell me how antything

  523. I have seen no such demand and I've been reading this newsgroup for 3 years.
  524. Those that advocate (including myself) changing the CW requirements are
  525. doing so to render the CW to a relationship that takes it out of the
  526. pass/fail priority it now holds and puts it in a context (testing
  527. wise) that is no greater or lesser than knowing any other mode of operation.

  597. I'm pretty sure only A3E and J3E voice are allowed on CB.  It's 47 CFR
  598. Part 95 if you care to look it up.  One-way transmissions are for sure
  599. illegal.  You are also (believe it or not) supposed to be quiet for
  600. one minute following 5 straight minutes of contact with another
  601. station.
